All Star
Netflix said on Thursday its original series Narcos will launch on Aug. 28.
The announcement included unreleased photos, featuring Brazil’s top star Wagner Moura (Elite Squad, Elysium) as Colombia’s legendary crime lord Pablo Escobar, and Boyd Holbrook (Gone Girl) and Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) as DEA agents. A promo reel featuring the slogan "Success is measured in grams" was also released.
Created and directed by Jose Padilha (Elite Squad, RoboCop), the show will depict “the true story of how cocaine became such a huge problem in the U.S. and Europe – and how it all started here in Medellin,” according to him.
The cast features several other LatAm stars, such as Colombians Juan Pablo Raba (El corazón del océano), and Manolo Cardona (Covert Affairs), Brazil’s renowned André Mattos (Elite Squad), Mexico’s Stephanie Sigman (Spectre) and Ana de la Reguera (Eastbound & Down, Nacho Libre), and Puerto Rico’s own Luis Guzman (Boogie Nights). British stage actress Joanna Christie (Once) is also credited.
Shot on location in Colombia, Narcos is produced by Gaumont International Television for Netflix, with Eric Newman (Children of Men), Doug Miro, and Carlos Bernard (Sorcerer’s Apprentice) as exec producers. Showrunner Chris Brancato recently exited the show and moved into ABC's Of Kings and Prophets under a two-year overall deal (with an option for a third) with producers ABC Studios.
Netflix also recently set an Aug.7 release for its Spanish-speaking dramedy Club de Cuervos, made by Mexico’s own Gaz Alazraki alongside Mike Lam and producer Leonardo Zimbron, responsible for the local box office hit Nosotros los Nobles (The Noble Family).
