I thought that was the idea, to rap over an old-school break beat. Then you have Mary J. singing New Edition for the hook. It's the kind of song you would hear in the 80s, but I see your point.

but the streets dreams remix perfectly encapsulates that whole escobar/iww era
And might highkey be the best example of that mafioso rap era going on in the mid 90’s
i feel like iww gets alot of credit for that mafioso era. But nothing about the album gives that feeling other than the persona

Yeah I always seen LIG as a retrospective of Nas life and career to that point with production to match. That sample being famously used by Biz in 1986 and using the New Edition hook from the same year seem very intentional. Same as Mary singing the hook, when she used the same sample on one of her classic tracks from 1994.
Either way it's a classic sample for a reason and he killed it
