Nas — heralded by some as one of the greatest rappers of all time — will headline Hammond’s Festival of the Lakes this summer at Wolf Lake.

Perhaps best known for his platinum and highly influential debut album "Illmatic," Nas is renowned for his highly literate rhymes, feud with Jay-Z and “off-beat conversational flow,” as one music critic put it. MTV, the Source Magazine, Billboard and other media outlets have called him one of the greatest rappers or lyricists of all time.

Nas will headline the marquee Saturday night spot at Hammond’s Festival of the Lakes this July, Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. announced on Facebook.

“We are proud to announce that an artist who has released 8 consecutive platinum and multi-platinum albums and has sold over 25 million records worldwide has agreed to perform for us this year,” McDermott posted. “He is arguably one of the greatest hip hop artists of all time.”

The annual summer festival — which started as AugustFest in 1984 — runs for a week in the summer at the Pavilion at Wolf Lake, featuring live, music, carnival rides, local foods, kayak rentals, fishing derbies and more attractions. It celebrates Hammond's three lakes: Lake Michigan, Wolf Lake and George Lake.

More than 50,000 people from across Northwest Indiana attend every year, often to see free concerts from acts like Ludacris, L.L. Cool J, Blues Traveler, BOSTON, The Charlie Daniels Band, Alien Ant Farm, Bush and Boyz II Men. The festival itself is free, but parking typically costs $20 to $25.

ANTHONY SALEH, 31

CEO, Emagen Entertainment Group; partner, WNDRCO

Last Year's Rank: New

FUTURE HISTORY: The artist manager helped marquee client Future make history as the first artist to score back-to-back No. 1 album debuts in the span of two weeks, FUTURE and HNDRXX, on the Billboard 200. At the risk of cannibalizing Future’s work, says Saleh, “we decided to play the long game and give consumers more stuff to bite on.”

THE YEAR AHEAD: Saleh is readying the release of new albums by Nas and new singer Alina Baraz. He’s also working with Future to build out his Freebandz clothing line. “We think it deserves to be put on a higher pedestal,” he says.

POTENTIAL INDUSTRY PITFALL: “I’m starting to feel the consumer’s mind space dwindle by the second. Artists need to do a better job of being impactful versus just being in consumers’ faces. Every single song, video, everything you do, should be designed for the most impact. Kendrick Lamar is a prime example. He delivered a 14-song album and only dropped incredible visuals.

I like hearing from the guys on this list. His pitfall quote is interesting. Most rappers are doing the exact opposite of Kendrick: releasing long albums designed more for streaming than for quality listening. Both Future albums last year were long (HNDRXX was in my top 5 btw to be fair). So he had two long ass albums soaking up streams all year.

I can't imagine Nas caring about stream numbers. I'd expect 12-14 tracks.
