On paper this sounded like the exact kind of movie I’d have zero interest in but I gave it a shot because I like Zendaya and John. I will say I was entertained. If you’ve ever experienced a toxic relationship this will hit home :wow:.

If I was to rate it I’d give it a 7/10. It wasn’t anywhere near the greatness of Fences but it did a good job nonetheless

What? None of this has anything to do with the film or any of the criticisms some folks have (including myself). I know a lot of people have started complaining about the age gap all of a sudden even though that's a tale as old as Hollywood itself, but that doesn't mean it's not a valid criticism to the film (just rather suspect timing, but what else is new in the SJW era).

My issue is that this kind of 'attack the people who dislike it' behavior is a joke. It's actually the same tactic employed by Levinson to negate critics within the film itself. Because he spends two full scenes shytting on critics he's cleared the field for everyone to diminish a critic's opinion on this film because "clearly" 'they must be in their feelings'. shyt is lame as hell and anyone resorting to that is better off spending their time coming up with actual arguments as to why they like the film.

That review is actually pretty damn spot-on. I know I raised both my eyebrows at Zendaya throwing out the line 'Do you know how disturbing it is that you can compartmentalize to such a degree that you can abuse me while eating mac and cheese?'. No one can tell me that line shouldn't have been immediately deleted after writing it, let alone make it into the end product. Same with the line where Malcolm angrily throws out that line with the word "solipsistic" in it. It's like half these lines were written with Thesaurus next to the typewriter, they feel so fake.

Again, I think some of the confrontations in the film feel realistic and folks might relate to that but only little of the actual dialogue feels real to me and that's a big problem in a film that is 80% talk and 20% musical bridges to awkwardly switch subjects of conversation.
The age gap is not a valid critique.

Zendaya is a grown 24 year old woman only in this p*ssyfied generation is there a problem with this. Not only that but in the movie ages are never disclosed. For all we know Malcolm could only be 28 or something. shyt is a non-issue and more common than people think.

I think the critique of critics and the film industry was a good touch just as a guy who is tired of reading these pretentious ass reviewers and Twitter thinkpiecers.

As for the way they were speaking regular folk don’t talk like that but there’s individuals who do speak like that. John David Washington’s character in this shyt is a fukking narcissistic film maker and the son of two educated parents is it really out of the question he would use advanced vocabulary?

As for the film being problematic and the relationship being abusive. I mean to what degree whose relationship is perfect and what type of fukking peaches and cream fluff pieces do people want as movies?

Along the lines of what Marie was saying when she mentioned once know someone loves you and is there for you, you never actually think of them again.

i was surprised my wife didn’t call me out for being so arrogant I could never be jealous/ worried of another man taking her. shyt had me like :sas2: when Zendaya said that.

Marie is 25. She was an addict as a 20 year old, and she says that was 5 years ago. No in/direct mention of Malcolm's age, but all the signs in the movie point to him being no older than 32-33, which would be a pretty common 7-8 year age gap. He may even be younger, as he hadn't accomplished anything yet professionally and didn't seem to be doing much leading up to this besides grinding and blowing Kiki's back out

Critic claims the director is using a black voice to criticize white women and others. Thoughts?

How using a black actor to vent white frustration sinks Malcolm & Marie
Loved the movie until I found that the director was white. However I still had gave it a pass because I said whatever it’s black actors and there is no c00nery. I saw the director was the same guy who made the other HBO show Zendaya is on, which is extremely tasteless and weird white people shyt. Then I started thinking about the dialogue where he had Washington speak on a angrytirade about white liberal critics which assessed Washington’s movie, as well as when Zendaya spoke and chastised him on his “blackness and not being being “real”, since he isn’t from the hood. The toxic masculinity that I before chalked up to showing dynamics that can occur in a real relationship, and with this context started seeing it as though it was intended we should be entertained by the verbal abuse porn we see on the screen in how he speaks to Zendaya. So in turn we have a movie where a couple is verbally abusing eachother giving critiques on the film world amd eachother in blackface for the director to vent his frustrations without consequence...I read that article and it was solid. Happy I watched it to see how great Zendaya is as an actress tho. Not watching again

If you think you're lonely now, ohhh girl...
I thought it was great, and they’re not having the same argument over and over. There’s levels to this shyt. Superficially, it starts as you didn’t thank me, but it gets deeper and deeper with each subsequent argument. I mean, how often are arguments in relationships really about one singular thing? Typically, it’s a culmination of things and the catalyst for the argument was the just tipping point. The tipping point was you didn’t thank me, but all of that is wrapped up in you’re a narcissist, why didn’t you cast me, etc.

I don’t think JDW is ever going to be a movie star. Meaning, I don’t think he’s ever going to be someone that you have to absolutely see whatever he’s in, but there’s not many of those kinds of actors left. He’s going to eat goooooood in Hollywood with the roles for a long time regardless.

Anyways, 9/10.

This is the age people nitpick plotholes, over analyze and over complicate themes, have no attention span, and find everything problematic.

Basically what homie was saying in the movie :dead:

So I take it the people that didn’t like it took offense to the things he said about the critic. Cause reading some of these posts it sounds like a bunch of hot dogs hollering.

I watched the movie and came in here expecting to see people arguing about or debating some of the conversations in the movie. but what I see is people over analyzing the dialogue and it’s (ironically) authenticity lol. Boy I swear these dudes be working themselves into a shoot lol

Yes I’m the beginning I felt like JDW was talking and ranting too much. But by the second half of the movie it felt like a natural conversation. If you didn’t think they both killed their parts then you don’t know shyt about good acting
