So you need to reach level 2 for armor and a level 3 for weapons. I was in the same position as you, that's going to take some time. Do some vanguard bounties and follow this video to get 400-700 Vanguard rep an hour:

I'm already Level 4 Dead Orbit, and I'm Level 3 Crucible. I just rock my Dead Orbit shyt when I play Strikes/Vanguard Bounties
