Yea they are expensive for a brush but I think you sold me on them. Should I just get medium?
depends on your hair texture. Me personally I don't use hard brushes, only Medium (on the spectrum of true medium for when my hair is med length, firm medium when I'm wolfing). I don't use soft brushes really outside of for shine (I dont get low cuts, if I did only then I`d use a soft).

I use hard medium and soft 10 min each bush two times a day with my wave storm and my kiss by red silk purple Durag

Stop getting a fade and tapers and get an even all over.
You hair on the sides is cut against the grain. From what you said if your waves on the side and back are lack'n.

1.5 even all the way around is the best time to start. No tapers.
