Whenever it becomes 'profitable' sadly. Human civilization is too deluded and insane to do it for the sole purpose of saving the world.

Sad when you think about it.

Funny how our own intelligence may drive us to our own self destruction. But when our ideas of survival is overconsumption and a complete divorce from the natural world it’s not surprising.

We've convinced ourselves that the ideologies we created are the actual territory when in reality they're just maps and blueprints. It is up to us whether we want to redefine why and how we live on this planet. Our current system of Capitalism is just another one of those ideologies. It isn't set in stone and there is no inherent law that says things MUST be done this way. This is why I say we've deluded ourselves as a civilization, thinking that the myths we created in our heads are the end all be all. No other creature that we know of is capable of creating 'myths' but humankind. It is a tremendous ability that may very well lead us to our own demise. And yet we can also use this ability to create a new vision for what it means to live on this planet and live in harmony with it at the same time. It is just a matter of will and our openess to imagine a different world.

Its the great irony of humankind. How does intelligence save you when it’s still beholden to the same animalistic primal behaviors like our other animal relatives? At our most advanced we’ll collectively realize our relation to the planet and our imperfections as animals and how we can not only sustain our world but make it even better. But as it stands right now civilization isn’t exactly civilized so much as it is more sophisticated in its savagery.

Very true. I feel we'll have to go through a great calamity before we advance cognitively as you're suggesting. Perhaps climate change is a test that will determine if evolve or not.
