Trump had his dalliance with Martial law when he did the upside down bible photo op.

The criticism from all sides was unprecedented. He isn't going there again.

Beyond starting a major war...like China Russia major, or allowing foreign actors to bring the US to its knees with a hack, I don't see what avenues he has to try to hang around after January 21st.

They already have. The alt-right is already continuing the process of being part of mainstream republican politics. This is why the right wing has fully embraced fascism. This is going to be a major problem in the long run.

I think it sucks what happened to him, but it's incredible how the Trump Administration has made it clear that they're okay with journalists being tortured, killed, and dismembered by Saudi Arabia on Turkish soil, okay with scientists shot up by Israel on Iranian soil, and okay with military generals being blown to pieces by the US government on Iraqi soil....but a spy sent by the CIA to secretly infiltrate Iran who was captured on their own soil by their own forces is somehow supposed to be totally off-limits.
