I would say this all started with Newt Gingrich and the contract with America in the 90s. Thats came out the same time as Fox News first started and conservative hate radio was taking off. Since then you have had damn near 30 years of non stop brainwashing of the GOP base with war propaganda against the left. It first got out of control with Bush's attempt with immigration reform. Then when Obama took power it drove the right insane that a black man became president for two terms. 2016 was the year the base revolted because they didn't want no more McCains ,Bush's, Romney's. If Trump didn't won it would have likely been Ted Cruz winning the nominee. Either way the GOP elite have lost control of the party. The base is riled up and Trump controls it. This is why so many republicans are entertaining his bullshyt election fraud claims. Alot of Republicans retained their seats thanks to turnout by the base, so the base controls the party.

I personally don't think anyone from the Lincoln project would be against Trump if he had keep them in the GOP inner circle, so I wouldn’t go as far as to say they regretted the choice. I think they are just made their consultation money dried up.

Eh, I think they genuinely hate him. They've been playing this party of patriots and small government for a long time. Trump came in and revealed the uglyness of the Republican voter. He came in and ruined this rosy picture they were trying to paint of the GOP and they hate him for it.
