Something did go wrong: he went from having access to campaign money (plus a big paycheck) to no access and a far smaller paycheck. Remember Trump was fuming about him buying a lambo and Ft Lauderdale mansion. Buying a lambo when you aren’t filthy rich is one of the worst financial decisions you can make, and it suggests he had a terrible spending problem,
He’s broke, realizes this is his last big job, and can’t pay his bills. It’s over for him.
