Trump is president, how worse could our judgment get
That's a problem with universal suffrage. In an ideal democratic system practically no one would be able to vote for the actual president. The only way to guarantee sound judgement is splitting up votes so that you vote for department members and secretaries of state instead of the president, and you get to vote for a certain department if you work in an industry that it regulates. So if you're a transport worker or a longshoreman or a pilot, you'd vote on the guy responsible for transport law only. If you're a teacher or a professor or a university student, you'd vote on the education guy, and so on. With regard to prisons that would be judges, CO's and everyone who works in the penal system, plus ex-cons and parolees. If only people who know first hand exactly what all the issues are in a given branch of government can vote on it, that should lead to very sound judgment in voting. Obviously such a system is wildly impractical and far too complex and unpopular to be implemented, but it's just the theory I have, like if there was a democracy video game that's how I would set up my game
