checked out redding & fame. i think it's due to 2 things mainly. the effects on the drums (snare on redding in particular), & a lack of those ghost or "fill" notes i mentioned.
on the snare on redding...it's like the verb is too big/wide in comparison to the decay time. it sounds artificial. im sure there's a precise way of putting this, but it doesn't sound "natural" for a snare to have a verb that wide and then just close up like that.
as far as fills/ghost notes...it's kind of hard to explain, but it's just about managing dynamics and putting notes in there that your ear can "feel" rhythmically. i practiced by trying to recreate drum fills from some rock songs i liked. idk if you have any drum player friends but they can break it down far better than i'm doing when it comes to getting those little accents between the kick and snare.
