In addition to what you mentioned, use ghost notes as well (where the drum is barely audible due to the velocity being tweaked).

Monotone hats will almost always make your drums sound robotic as well, so make sure you pay attention to them when you're laying down patterns. Drop a song where you think your patterns are robotic and i'll let you know what i think as far as potential improvements.

checked out redding & fame. i think it's due to 2 things mainly. the effects on the drums (snare on redding in particular), & a lack of those ghost or "fill" notes i mentioned.

on the snare on redding...it's like the verb is too big/wide in comparison to the decay time. it sounds artificial. im sure there's a precise way of putting this, but it doesn't sound "natural" for a snare to have a verb that wide and then just close up like that.

as far as fills/ghost notes...it's kind of hard to explain, but it's just about managing dynamics and putting notes in there that your ear can "feel" rhythmically. i practiced by trying to recreate drum fills from some rock songs i liked. idk if you have any drum player friends but they can break it down far better than i'm doing when it comes to getting those little accents between the kick and snare.

The Mars Volta - Cassandra Gemini I II III IV V (complete version 32 min) - YouTube
^check this for example.

^hear the "fills" in the intro right after the clap?

dunno if that helps bruh, it's way easier to explain i person :shaq2:

Question for everybody...what hardware/software are you using to lay your tracks?? Some of you have some VERY intricate beats.
Right now I'm using Reason 5 and Cakewalk Sonar for mixing. I also use a virtual keyboard.

Gonna hang up my Reason 5 this summer. After a couple years of using I realized that my work flow is too slow. Looking for new software's to try, any suggestions?

why are you worried about speed?

I was always an analog beat maker, got back in the game and tried FLStudio and Reason. It's not even about speed to be honest, i'm never gonna rush my work. It's been 2 years on and off going from mouse, keys, MPD. window switching using recycle to chop up a sample. Bought a second monitor helped but than I started re-wiring more. I dunno man maybe its the transition from Analog to Digital. My old workflow was an MPC, Motif, and a turntable and i use to love the simplicity of that. Use to be able to just wake up hop on the mpc for 10 min load a sample, play with drums go to work and come back the night and finish it up.Now, sometimes i find myself half way through a beat i'm making and lose the idea and don't feel the vibe anymore and scrap the whole thing :snoop:. I hope i'm making sense man, any suggestions?
