I dunno man. You can make it do what it do. TOok me years to get to a point where my sound quality was at an acceptable level. The key to it was compression because i was running into peaking and there was a distinct way i wanted my bass to sound in the car. I like to be able to turn to volume up to 26 and maintain sound integrity. Sometimes, its good to take the laptop to the whip, plug it into the auxillary jack and play with your sound at that level. From there put on some rinky dink headphones, or some clock radio speakers. For the music ive sold doing that has saved engineers some work.

I dont put compression on samples. I let the eq do what it do on that level. I put compression at the master/kick level though. I have the master volume for my track up to 90. I then have compression on the master track set as follows.

Threshold -8.4
Ratio 3:2: 1
Gain 3.4
Attack 10.8
Release 117
Type Soft/R

From here i have a lot of room to play with the volume. I keep samples anywhere from 55 or less. Keep snares around 50 or less. Kicks around 55 or less. From here everything else comes down to how you eq it. I like the volume high with NO PEAKING. If your tracks are peaking first thing i check is volume. Second thing is bass boosts. Third thing is the low end on an eq. Usually playing with those 3 things can help eliminate peaking

When i hear a sample that has a piercing sound like violins that are screaming too lound about to buss my eardrums i play with the 4th and 5th knobs from the left on the parametric eq and the 500hz/1500hz knobs on the 5 band eq.

Sound quality should be the last thing you have to think about when you're havin fun with music. All peaking must be stopped but you should be able to have that music loud.

my kick drums are usually:

Threshold -12.5
Ratio 7.5: 1
Gain 9.0
Attack 10.0
Release 200

and thats usually the only thing i'll compress ...

to be honest...i dont even care about my beats sounding clean...hiphop is supposed to sound gritty, diy and cheap to a certain extent imo

howevah! I still want my stuff to sound fat and have that warmth...i think half my problems comes from sampling mp3s :weirdo:

.wavs are uncompressed format, so they are better to sample, but 328kbps Mp3's are really good compared to the compression rates they used to come as, some people can't tell the difference n e more

Im talking about peaking though. The shyt that makes your speakers sound like shyt at level 15 - 20 for no good reason. That poppy sound that isnt good for your speakers.

A simple way to make a slappy kick into a soft thump is to just fruity filter. From there you can use the 5 band eq and bring out qualities you want. My compression is set at

Threshold 0.0
ratio 0.4:1
gain 0:0
Attack 0:0
Release 1
type Hard

I convert to wav  and use an unregistered version of cool edit 96 to chop samples.

i use the fruity limiter for that... i dont even pay attention to the numbers i just turn the gain down until it sounds right

and i use slicex for chopping.

you shouldn't really be using a preset on the master/while mastering lol. and you sure as fukk shouldn't just slap a standard preset (compression or otherwise) setting you came up with on anything in the mix. different sounds need to be treated differently for different tracks...and some sounds you don't even need to compress or eq or anything.

maximus is a multi-band compressor, limiter, gate, and some other shyt i'm forgetting. i don't really use it cuz i've got other stuff i like better but now that i think of it, it might be nice for ny compression...or maybe side-chaining stuff.
