I think the issue is that the NBA historically has just not had enough good dunkers in the league to make the contest interesting every year. That's why most dunk contests have either been complete trash or forgettable.

The 3-Pt Contest doesn't have these issues because we got so many capable shooters that can make it interesting. Even if the top shooters (Currys, Klay, Booker, Dame, Hield, etc.) all don't participate they can manage just fine.

All these dunkers who are failing to entertain could do the same generic windmill dunks or between the leg flushes that would’ve brought the house down 20 years ago.

But nobody cares about that now, so they try to tack on all this extra stuff.

3pt contest at its core is simply a time-based competition of who can perform the simplest mechanic at an efficient rate.
