It's an investigative tool but it's not becoming the most important snitch for the Feds, actual snitches will always be the most important part of building cases against criminal enterprises. Most if not all enforcement agencies do have social media units these days but social media isn't the sole reason guys get indicted.

Edit: The bolded is wrong, you can get a ham sandwich indicted but it won't prove the entire case.

You're absolutely correct. The Feds know who the cartel people are, and if they know who they are then they know who you are if that's your connect. They can't bust the cartel because their in a foreign country, but they can bust you though. Personally if I were that big in the game I would buy from a Mexican gang that gets it from the cartel.
