I think generationally through many mainstream subcultures, since like 2006 or so, with the introduction of bullshyt like "The Secret" taking hold, and social media kind of further spreading these belief systems, is what led to the current epidemic of people embracing these beliefs. It's always been a deep part of American culture, the 80's, "me generation", shyt like Ayn Rand, but the newest form is extremely selfish and toxic, hateful and dressed up as "positivity" and positive thinking. What I see from friends of mine is equating anything that isn't in line with their world as "negative", therefore it's negative to discuss violence in Chicago, or the oppression of the poor, systemic racism, it's all just negativity to them. You see this everywhere from Hollywood celebs to the trap stars at every level. I also think you hear it in the music, it started with "hater", and now it's "energy", and "vibes", right?
Now, specifically, and generally, I think framing these gaudy, cliched, purchases with "blessed" and "positive energy" is thinly disguising shameless flaunting of their possessions. Also, the very nature of social media is imitating, and I think they follow the lead on what their favorite rappers do, who in turn, are copying what Hollywood celebs/pop stars do.
Going deeper, I think these "hashtags" help sell the idea that they really are blessed and worthy of all bestowed on them.
It's deeply ironic, hilarious, and pretty sickening, to see it displayed here, concerning heroin sales, to members of their own communities, in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. I don't condemn drug traffickers, but heroin and meth, crack, sold at retail to your people is different though, and with the extra of equating it with "positive thinking" and "positive energy".
