The Cavs have returned to the postseason for the first time since the 2018 NBA Finals. It is their first postseason appearance without a certain #23 since 1998. Buoyed by one of the top defenses in the league, Cleveland also boasts the 8th best offensive efficiency rating as well. In a conference featuring the defending conference champion Celtics, the 2021 NBA champion Bucks, and a Sixers squad with an MVP candidate, the Cavs are in tier of their own with hopes to prove they can get to the upper echelon of the East. Donovan Mitchell's arrival is the key difference between this year and last. Also, in the 2022 Play-In, the Cavs were decimated by injuries to their front court and backcourt.

The Knicks went on a tear after the All-Star break. Jalen Brunson proved he's on the way to All-NBA status and his arrival to New York is the key difference between a 35 win squad a year ago and getting to the 5th spot this year. Julius Randle had a bounce back season but injured his ankle during the last 10 games of the season. His availability and effectiveness when he returns are huge questions. Meanwhile, the Knicks young core and addition of Josh Hart have been instrumental in keeping Thibs' squad out of the Play-In Tournament.

Two star guards who went from West to East lead their new teams in this 1st round clash. For Cleveland, its time to get out of a Hall of Famer's shadow. For New York, its time to prove they can beat the team that stars the player they coveted all last summer.
