I hate to say it, but the big problem is an unsubstantiated belief in a personal god.
While belief in God has admittedly inspired people to do great things, it has also inspired people to do obscenely horrible things.
Being presumptuous enough to think you know the desires of an entity that can't even be proven, based on family tradition and ancient texts, is pure ignorance. In addition, the concept of a "personal" god can't help but be skewed by one's own personal desires. I can think of not one person who adheres completely to the scriptural texts they promote, quick to blame imperfection for their own subconscious lack of faith.
Not that I think such scriptures can be adhered to exactly, full as they are with contradictions...which might explain the contradictory nature of the believer, espousing virtures such as love and peace, but expressing hatred and starting wars with their fellowman.
As for the people in this video who took part in beating and burning to death individuals they called "witches", their actions are what I call demonic and a thousand pentagrams couldn't hold the evil present in this video. Here we see religion in line with its history: used as a tool to bully, torture, and kill.
Many believers would kill children, torture their fellowman, and hurt their own families if they believed God sactioned it AND they have a scriptural precedent to do so. The ultimate Uncle Toms, obedient slaves who find purpose in their subservience, regardless of how brutal the master is. "Yessir, Massa God, I sho is a sinner. You wants me to kill this unrepetant witch? Assolutely, Massa God."
To make it even more pathetic, this slavemaster is no whip-wielding flesh-and-blood human, it is a fantasy embedded in the psyche of the indoctrinated, used by psychopaths to justify their own actions and to control the weak-willed.
It's so demonic.
