you have a point dead7. obama expanded many of these programs instead of the alternative and costlier option of more boots on the ground. that said, there aren't many (any?) options to slowing down or stopping the political and strategic equivalent of a freight train going full speed down hill and still maintain a safety net. it's also shortsighted to say "take responsibility" (or fix) 8 previous years of policy making, strategy, etc when the homeland security climate was so toxic and threatening (by our own doing in many cases). it's not simple to unring that bell.
personally i think we're in a catch 22. i can see terrorist (foreign or domestic or "patriotic') taking advantage of any reduction in scope of spying. i don't know the answer, but i agree something needs to change. and we'll likely have to make some big sacrifices, probably even to our own safety to regain some of our liberties. is the general public up for that though?
