Public domain characters can be tricky. Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, Little Mermaid, and some other literary characters are public domain. If you wanted to make a movie or write a comic book about Sherlock Holmes, you can do it. You just can’t do a Robert Downey version of it. Little Mermaid is public domain so you could make a movie if you want but you can't say do a direct sequel that to the Disney Little Mermaid.

I think the key difference between current characters and those from way back in the day is that there wasn’t an entire industry with Dracula or Sherlock Holmes propping it up. Characters like Batman and Mickey Mouse are currently being used and represent specific things.

Nobody cares how Dracula is portrayed. People will care if Mickey Mouse has a string of movies where he is a serial killer.

I LIVE IN A CARDBOARD BOX!
shyt... if Pooh and Piglet looked like that, I'd abandon them too.

" Here we go guys... let's have a picnic here... in the middle of nowhere... by the side of the road. Ooops, I forgot something in the car."

Pooh hasn't been a major player in like 20 years. You can say Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, and majority of folks will be like "Who?" Disney doesn't even use Mickey though. And current gen probably never seen a Mickey movie. Plus, at one point he was used for anything...his second famous look has him as a Sorcerer (apprentice). AND Disney did have Once Upon a Time, with their version of pubic domain characters.

Disney doesn’t use Mickey? Bruh he has numerous shows on right now and is the face of Disneys most important business, the theme parks. You go to the parks and it’s people everywhere with Mickey Ears and his silhouette is EVERYWHERE.

FYI Pooh has had like 9 movies, multiple tv shows, and a broadway play in the last 20 years. :heh:

Also everyone knows at least Pooh and Tigger.
