My thread got merged with this one. My only complaint is this thread topic mentions North Korea attacking guam but this falls in line with typical North Korean lashing out with threats and typically results in nothing.

I think the miniaturization of a nuclear warhead and North Korea basically becoming an official nuclear state is more worthy of being the thread topic like my thread was and bigger news today.

Just saying. :hubie:

Is NK going invade Guam? Isn't Guam in the middle of nowhere even by South Pacific standards

At this point if it's to be believed, this shyt is a done deal. NK is a nuclear state now. It's finished. So there is no real reason to start busting guns because all that rhetoric about busting guns was made as a deterrent to prevent North Korea becoming a nuclear state.

The thing is while the situation in North Korea is crazy for the population, I don't think the leadership is that crazy. The leadership can hoard any luxuries and resources in the country like they already do and live peaceful lives without going to war. War would guarantee that comes to an end. They won't do anything I don't think.

More than likely they view gaining a nuclear missile as a deterrent from being invaded or attacked by the US, Japan, and SK. It's a defensive measure and it will probably work.

It also has the benefit of making North Korea an almost permenant buffer state against American expansion that threatens Russian and Chinese interest in the region.

In fact if I was to put my conspiracy cap on, I would bet money that Russia was behind helping them reach this step. Not just because of Russia being the popular new boogy man but because Russia has shown a new interest in the events and politics of North Korea recently. They are the only ones who would make sense along with the Chinese who would benefit from North Korea achieving this goal. I don't think the Chinese would do it because I think they only tolerate NK at this point and would have been happy with the status quo or North Korea ramping down militarily. The US would back off, no threat of war and an impeding refugee crisis, and they still get to keep a buffer state.

The secret of North Korea's advances comes from their early coup in hiring rogue Russian scientists in 1991 with the collapse of the USSR. Everyone was trying to get their hands on them and even the US had an entire program to hire them to remove them from the hands of rogue states. This worked only to an extent, as the DPRK was still able to recruit them. The same program was to buy out all the available weapons systems from the new small ex-Soviet states.

The famous one was the purchase of MIG-29C from Moldova that the Iranians were just about to finalize purchase when the US swooped in and took it. These Particular MIG-29C's were the real deal and unlike those sold to non-soviets like Yemen or Yugoslavia, they were not downgraded mickey mouse models. This in particular had the spinal mounted infra-red search and track (IRST) that was more advanced than anything the US had and would have been more than a match for anything in NATO arsenal, Iran would have got this at a bargain.

According to Robert Baer's book in the great auction of 1991, the Iranians got their hands on a few nuclear warheads from Kazakhstan and since their nuclear program was in its infancy they traded it to the North Koreans. Building a large 1945 style nuclear bomb is easy and any engineering company or university laboratory can build it provided with fissile material but a miniaturized one that can fit into a warhead is very difficult. You need to boost the fission, use rare earth materials and your precision engineering has to be very fine.

This is why the Pakistanis were in North Korea too. It was for warhead design and for the long range liquid Scud experiments. The Pakistanis had the most advanced solid fueled tactical missiles because of Chinese help, but they needed help in long range missiles. They were also there for the joint warhead design and the Iranians fronted both the money and the actual warheads (from Kazakhstan post-USSR) to reverse engineer. The Pakistanis of course also traded their enrichment centrifuges technology that AQ Khan stole from Belgium. The North Koreans depended more on Pakistani and Iranian scientists when the Russian scientists had their contracts expire and they returned home.

All makes sense.

I'm honestly more worried about what Trump will do than what Kim Jong-Un will do. As crazy as he is, if it comes down to it I don't think he'd attack Guam because he has too much to lose.

But I'm sure Trump is looking for anything to draw attention away from the FBI investigation, and a war with North Korea would do nicely.

Serious question - why is Guam catching this stray? Instead of SK or the west coast? I'm sitting here enjoying this hookah in Seattle and technically in the path of what could be the worst attack in US history.

Kim Jong-Un isn't going to attack Guam. They announced this right after Trump's fire and fury comment.

This is an area where there is little room to maneuver for the US, you have 2 choices. First strike attack which will destroy Pyonyang but then a counterattack which you will suffer massive casualties, write off hundred of thousands of South Korean/Japanese casualties or swallow your pride and sit down and talk.
