That call was 100% a byproduct of the college rules of when a player is ruled down. In the NFL, that's a turnover. But since players are effectively immediately down once they have established control of the ball and touch the ground in any way. Under those rules, it's tough to call it a catch and fumble without acknowledging that the hit happened after he was technically down.
Absolute bullshyt, but it is what it is. That's probably on the shortlist of college rules that are about to get deaded in the not so distant future.
