There has never been any evidence for deterrence - if you own guns you're far more likely to have a shooting within the family and don't show the slightest reduction in likelihood of being shot by someone outside the family.

If that were true, then homes with guns in them would have lower murder victimization rates than homes without guns in them regardless of what the perps know ahead of time, because once the homeowner brandished and/or used the weapon, they would reduce their chances of being killed. And study after study shows that's untrue even when you account for numerous other factor.
