Nipsey Hussle’s brother found him dying. These are his final moments

The caller on the other end of Samiel Asghedom’s phone was panicked but clear. His younger brother — known to the world as rapper Nipsey Hussle, but to Samiel as just Nip — had been shot.

It was Sunday afternoon — hours before hundreds of mourners would descend on South Los Angeles to remember a man known as much for his boastful music as for his humble contributions to his community. And days before a man named Eric Holder would be charged with murder.

Samiel jumped into his car parked outside his grandmother’s house. He ignored the red lights as he raced down Slauson Avenue — the South Los Angeles street that he and Nip were working to uplift. He arrived at the Marathon Clothing store precious minutes after a gunman fired multiple rounds into Nip, but before the paramedics pulled up. The time when life can precariously slip into death.

Blood stained the front of his brother’s shirt and a hole marked where a bullet entered his leg.

There’s no reason for him to still be breathing, Samiel thought.

But Nip was. Air rushed in and out of his nose — strong and loud.

Growing up in turf claimed by the Rollin’ 60s Crips gang, Samiel had seen death up close. Bullets, when they hit their target in the chest like the ones that hit Nip, were cruel and quick.

He’s meant to be alive, Samiel thought.

:::

On Wednesday, Samiel recounted his brother’s final moments to The Times. He says he is haunted most by the way the shooting happened.

They were best friends. He was by Nipsey’s side when he was selling T-shirts and CDs from his car as a teenager, there when he opened a clothing store in the strip mall where they used to hang in the parking lot, and there when he signed a record deal with a major label. Last Sunday was no exception.

Police say Nip, born Ermias Asghedom, was gunned down by Holder, a 29-year-old aspiring rapper. Video from a nearby security camera captured the brazen attack, which occurred in broad daylight. Footage has been circulating on social media. What it doesn’t show is Holder talking to Nip a few minutes earlier.

Holder was a familiar face in South L.A. Pictures on social media show him wearing the Crips-blue bandannas, but in recent years, he seems to have vanished.

He re-emerged at the Marathon Clothing store on Sunday. The two men talked, shook hands and Holder left.

Nips would pop up in and out of his store without notice, his brother and others said. Samiel worried about his safety, and urged him to stop hanging in the parking lot and come inside.

Nips had a bodyguard, but he moved freely through his neighborhood and those of rival gangs without worry.

“Nip is sporadic,” Samiel said. “Nip gonna pull up and hop up out of the Jordan Downs projects, Nickerson Gardens, in any ‘hood in L.A., Compton, Watts — solo with $150,000 of jewelry on his neck and [an] $80,000 Rolex with no security. That’s why the people loved him.”

He straddled many worlds with ease. His cool demeanor and regular appearances at the store made him relatable.

Nip built his reputation in the street, saying in a 2014 interview with the YouTube channel Vlad TV that he had joined the Rollin’ 60s as a teenager. But over the years, he grew his street hustle into legitimate businesses, connecting with the larger community of Los Angeles and the world, including some cops and politicians His music echoed his environment, but it also spread his message of entrepreneurship and the importance of planning for long-term success.

That strip mall was a business model for the future of his ’hood and his second home.

Samiel hushed the crowd that had formed around his brother. Nip laid on his back with his head tilted to the side.

The 911 operator told him what to do. Samiel found the hard, flat spot on his brother’s chest, clasped his hands together and pushed forcibly down, hard, to keep Nip breathing.

“1, 2, 3, 4.”

When the 911 operator reached 20, the wail of an ambulance’s siren filled the air around the strip mall — a place the brothers said they had been arrested many times before after the sound of different sirens.

Paramedics inserted a tube down Nipsey’s throat, stuck an IV in his arm and then lifted him off the pavement onto a waiting stretcher.

A chilling scream erupted from somewhere in the crowd of those who had gathered to watch. A bullet had pierced the back of Nipsey’s head.

For the first time, Samiel saw the gunshot wound on the back of his brother’s head. He started praying.

:::

The strip mall was the place where Nip and Samiel got their hair cut and ate burgers. It was where both brothers said cops regularly held raids.

Los Angeles police still patrol the area often and treat people suspiciously, Samiel said.

The Marathon Clothing store hired mostly felons because they often have a hard time finding work with a criminal record. Felons also are prohibited from carrying guns.

“Because of that, the man was able to shoot my brother, start running, realize nobody out there had a gun, stop, turn back around, walk up, shoot my brother two more times, start to run, realize nobody had a gun, nobody was responding, ran back up and shot my brother three more times, shoot him in the head and kicked him in the head and then ran off,” Samiel dissected.

“If somebody would’ve been there — if I would’ve been there — I would’ve shot back,” he said. “I just wish I would’ve been there.”

The ambulance arrived at the hospital before Samiel got there. The doctor seemed to be avoiding him.

Samiel walked toward the ambulance and approached a paramedic.

“I know who he is,” the man said. “I’m a fan. I respect what he was doing in the community.”

“We tried our hardest,” Samiel recalls him saying.

Since then, Samiel has been trying to come to terms with what happened, but it’s hard to know who to trust. His brother’s death feels like an “execution.”

He wonders if the attack was a hit job or if Holder was simply jealous.

“It doesn’t make sense that somebody from the area, that just snuck up, and just talked to him and shook his hand minutes before,” Samiel said. “It’s mind-boggling.”

Samiel said he’s focused on preserving his brother’s legacy.

“He made something work in an area that was run-down, that people were scared to come to, and he turned it into a landmark,” he said. “All races. Different states. Many countries. They all come to Crenshaw and Slauson. He was truly the people’s champ.”

45 seconds is a long time to decide how you plan to handle a situation you either gonna run or try to disarm the person. It's obvious the whole plaza decided to run
if you took 45 seconds to decide what to do then the shooting would have been over already...

so really you have 10-15 seconds to assess the situation, target the shooter, then another 10-20 seconds to run over and do something?

wait.. lets add it up... 20-35 seconds.... nipsey would have already been blasted and dude would have been walking back to kick his head...

so you gotta get up and active within the first 5-10 seconds from the first shot... assess the situation, decide what to do and run over within that time to save him...10-15 seconds to do all that...

This is pretty much par for the course for anyone who’s lost a family member to street violence. I’ve lost two cousins and dozens of people I know (cape verdean living in Boston). I’ve lived through it. Plenty of times. And I’m talking regular folk not super stars.

The first reaction is always that it was bigger than it really was. Some larger scheme. Some larger plan. No one wants to imagine that their family member or friend went out on some petty bullshyt. It’s part of the bargaining after death.

Sometimes it just is what it is.

Yeah but ur cousins wasn’t a millionaire rapper/businessman and on the way to becoming the modern day Magic Johnson in the Hood

The motive clear as day.

Nipsey was a popular and respected person in his neighborhood, a successful rapper, had his own businesses, had lots of jewelry nice cars, AND had Lauren London on his arm.

Then u take his killer, Eric Holder. From all accounts he known as a snitch, the. His nickname is literally “shytty”.

U go to Sunday.....Nipsey has a confrontation with shytty in public view. Now take everything I said about Nipsey, everything I said about Eric, throw in being embarrassment n hurt feelings, thats ur motive.

The killer probably grew to dislike Nipsey over the years as his popularity and street legend grew. He probably started fantasying about killing Nip, never thinking he would actually get the chance. But once he saw an opening he took advantage of it.

It’s sad either way but if him and Nipsey really didn’t have an altercation it makes it much worse. It would also explain why they were so relaxed out there.

We will never get the full story because dude is heartless, pleading not guilty and will most likely try insanity.

It's no conspiracy. A hit style murder, yes, but no conspiracy.

More than likely its true that dude came up there and shook hands with Nipsey and his peeps to mentally disarm them. Then that would allow him to basically walk back into the picture unbothered bc he was just there mins earlier talking to them.

Now, HOW he found out Nipsey was there at the store at that exact time may be cause for concern/looking into. Who tipped him off? Was it just pure coincidence?

Also, i find it odd that if getaway chick didn't know, why would he have the getaway car parked in back. Like what did he tell her? "Wait right here around back I'm going to store"...why wouldn't he tell her to wait in front? And how'd he run off to the car without her being suspicious? How you just finished shooting 3 ppl and run away and then calmly get in a car. She had to have sped off, not just calmly pulled away like normal.

Man hell naw, as i type this its getting more incredulous. She knew. She needs to be in jail.

Only way this is a conspiracy is if dude gets off somehow with the mental health angle.
Honestly it's a real possibility that the killer had been scoping out nipsey for months. Nipsey is always with security or big crowds. So it's not easy to catch him off guard. And for this to happen on the ONE day where he's not with any security. That leads me to believe holder coulda been following nipsey for a while and was just waiting for the perfect opportunity. Not a wild coincidence. Just a dude who was on a mission to kill somebody and finally got his chance. It's possible this was always bound to happen the first time nipsey let his guard down. Anything is possible.

Y'all talking about ppl tackling shooters.

In the case of a shooting, especially outside, most ppl are gonna scatter, duck behind cars, etc. I'm not from LA, but I'd imagine that's fairly common when ppl hear gunshots. At best, you find cover and then fire back if you have a gun.

In this case, dude shot.....then stopped bc he ran. But then he started shooting again, then stopped again.....then started shooting again the final time. Most shootings, once the shots stop it's over. This was different, people didnt know when to come out.

Especially when everything was calm beforehand, no arguing. Ppl are just gonna duck, unless they're bodyguards who know it's time to possibly risk their life.

This was just a freak situation where it's a Sunday, a peaceful calm day, nobody was strapped, no cops in the area, no other street nikkas on the scene. Nothing.

I peeped that too, but also even if turns out there was an argument and the dude did come back, you expect Nip to immediately get live? He probably would have been like "this nikka again"

LA Times article @KingBenji just posted confirms shooter was there minutes before the video clip. It doesn't confirm if there was an argument or not
I don't expect him to get live, I would expect him to take precautions tho. Dude is a known killer, in n out of mental wards, snitched/crossed his own homies.

Whether if there was an arguement or him telling him he dont fukk wit rats, he gotta be on alert, especially knowing what they know about dude.
