Comedy Central is saying “good night” to Larry Wilmore.

The cabler has cancelled The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore, with this Thursday’s episode serving as the show’s swan song.

“Even though we’ve given it a year and a half, we’ve been hoping against hope that it would start to click with our audience, but it hasn’t happened and we’ve haven’t seen evidence of it happening,” Comedy Central president Kent Alterman told the New York Times.

“I’m really grateful to Comedy Central, Jon Stewart, and our fans to have had this opportunity,” Wilmore said in a statement. “But I’m also saddened and surprised we won’t be covering this crazy election or ‘The Unblackening’ as we’ve coined it. And keeping it 100, I guess I hadn’t counted on ‘The Unblackening’ happening to my time slot as well.”

As the Times notes, Wilmore has been drawing half the ratings of his predecessor, Stepen Colbert (1.7 million versus 776K).

For the foreseeable future, @Midnight will replace The Nightly Show at 11:30, with Trevor Noah’s also-struggling Daily Show staying put at 11 pm. A replacement for Wilmore will be announced sometime next year.

Despite being in the midst of one of the most incendiary election seasons in history, Wilmore’s penetrating commentary — particularly with regard to race relations — failed to cut through the clutter, bemoaned Alterman. “We were hoping that we would get a turnaround along the way including the wild, wild two weeks of the conventions.,” he told the Times. “We just haven’t seen it on any level from the general conversation to ratings to any sort of traction on social media platforms.”

Didn't expect this. Figured they would let it ride it out for a while.

Larry is a legend behind the scenes. But he just wasn't that good of a host and the show wasnt great.

The format was garbage. They were trying to discuss real issues but would constantly have 2 of his writers as 2 of the 3 guests during the round table section and they would add nothing but corny Jokes.

The only good thing to come out of it was Mike yard. That guys hilarious.

I'm happy Larry got the chance but the show just never connected.

I started letting it pile up on on my dvr and lost interest in keeping up.

I've yet to meet anyone who watches Inside Amy Schumer, yet her show is going into it's fifth season. Larry Wilmore isn't a strong host but the premise was a good, Mike Yard was a good hire and i hope he gets another gig.
yeah i mean who the fukk is still watching Tosh.0 out there....i mean seriously...too many good shows getting killed off before they can gain any footing

but we all know why this and daily show are failing :mjpls:

All of this, I have so much respect for dude, and the show did get much better from where it started.
But it never became appointment television. Something always seemed to not click for me .

Basically the Same with Trevor on TDS, I DVR it every night still out of loyalty, but I only watch it if the guest is someone I care about, or something particularly wild happened in the news.

This election needs Steward and Colbert back at their old desks, if only til October lol.

I give CC props for giving them 18 months tho, I was sure they were going to hit Larry with the :mjpls:over a year ago. I'm going to miss a couple of the segments , they were too honest with the racial sh!t and some of the ways they took it on were funny.
