Unfortunately it started as a good saying and it makes sense, but more often than not it just means "go to my favorite echo chambers and block my ears every time I'm presented with contrary evidence".

I wouldn't discourage people from doing their own research if it was in good faith (which never happens). How many would have heard about or read Cheikh Anta Diop and other Black scholars if they were not "doing their own research"?

How does one without a scientific background, I.e., the vast majority of Americans, conduct research on something as specialized and technical as vaccine development?
