RaMell got a new fan out of me. I had put this off for the longest because I thought it would be too Malickian-inspired for its own good. Some moments where I thought it would go all the way ‘Tree of Life’ and thankfully he dialed it back just right.

It was worth the watch and should not be dismissed as black trauma porn. There was an adjustment period at the start just off the presentation style alone, but once things clicked for me, the film had me locked in until the end.

Some really crazy camerawork in this, too. Even the simple things like the way they captured Aunjanue slicing up that cake had me like :leon:

From a technical standpoint, this is a well made film. The POV style can catch some off guard but I never felt it was that difficult to follow. First 1/4 of the film definitely feels like it's getting the audience used to the cinematography but after that it settles well into the story.

The plot I don't think I need to get into. Some will call it Black trauma porn and while I think it does a great job in not fully delving into the sadism of the story, I just think some will always see these films like that. However, these stories have to be told, especially now. We can't let this history be forgotten and then have white folks pretend it never happened.

Acting was great, but like I said, from a technical standpoint, the film was great through and through. 5/5 mics

I saw this on MGM+ and noticed it was a 2x Oscar Nominee, and decided to watch it without knowing the history. After watching the movie, I did not like it and I understand why White people love the movie:mjpls:. I have been done with black trauma porn, since I watched 12 years a slave over a decade ago.
