Pizalatto is something of a hack, and Cary Fukanaga smoothed over his worst instincts as a director and show runner, and basically gave True Detective S1 it's look, feel, and vibe. We saw what he did with Season 2. It was nearly unwatchable. Has he done anything since Season 2?

oh, of course, S3, I didn't watch, wasn't very well received, I remember.

Season 3 was well received. I thought it was pretty good.

I think it was mildly positively received, nowhere near the kind of acclaim for Season 1, I watched some bits and pieces last year

Some of that could be just the nature of a third season of a troubled series, 4 years later.

seasons 1 and 2 are like a lot of classic rappers first albums. Lot of rappers have classic first albums because they had years to make it. Then the album changes the game, sells a ton and the label rushes them to make a second album in less than half the time they had to make the first album.

I'm not saying this is the sole reason season 1 was dope but Pizzolatto stole a gang of material from a writer named Thomas Ligotti. Damn near everything Rust said, which was a major part of why fans loved the first season. He didn't take it word for word, he paraphrased a bunch of quotes and lines from various stories, by Ligotti.

He would've been wiser just going 100% Lovecraft in season 1 because #1 that's what people were expecting and #2 Lovecraft's material is public domain and has been used so many times nobody gives a fukk if you reference it.

I wouldn't be surprised. either way I am pretty sure I read he worked on season 1 for a long time and then they wanted season 2 real quick. I don't doubt the director guy who did Mr. Robot helped him a lot too because lot of differences between season 1 vs 2 and 3.

This is incorrect.

CJF did S1. Sam Esmail did Mr. Robot.

Again, this is false.

Season 1 got 87% on RT.

Season 3 got 85% on RT.

I don't think 3 is anywhere near 1 but they were received more or less the same by critics.

What is this retroactive hate towards season 3?

People loved it when it was coming out, I remember the live threads here
No one who watched S3 calls it trash. Criticisms here and there of course, but it's a well done season of TV no matter how you slice it. It's just lazy and convenient to call it trash to continue the years running "Nic fell off" narrative.
