Above the fray.
Shout out to football bruh Odafe :salute: ....good article btw also:ehh:
I love how he tied so many threads of history together concerning names and the African experience in the U.S. over the past couple centuries.

EDIT:
One thing that would have been interesting to add was the wave of name changes that came out of African Americans in the 1960s-70s as a rejection of that prior trauma(similar to Odafe here but on a longer time scale).

I think the author might be working on a book or longer article about that.
A lot of that, and the new age names came out of the New York metro area with the rise and spread of the Nation of Gods and Earths.

A lot of Igbos has very Americanized names as whole names they really be like Ashley Stacy Onyeji or Jason Micheal Eregbu.

Strong c00n vibes
Or maybe just maybe it’s due to the fact that Nigeria was a colony belonging to England along with the genocidal efforts of the Biafran civil war

If reporters can learn the Polynesian names, they can learn the West African ones.
Topic of Ethnic vs English language names came up in a recent thread. Though this was an interesting spin on the topic.

Very true.

Also think of the irony when whites make fun of certain "black" names without realizing those names are European in origin. Demetrius, Tyrone etc., are old Greek and Irish names that we just brought back into use.

True. Members over a certain age will remember when some of those names were almost exclusively Black names. Leroy and Tyrone were two of them.

And since we're speaking of football............when I first watched the playoffs, and heard about the Lamar Hunt trophy, I swore up and down the Kansas City Chiefs were originally owned by a Black man.

The ignorant things I read on the Coli have me :dwillhuh:

I'm legit confused. Why would an Igbo individual prefer an English name over a traditional Igbo name?
