Cleveland’s Fox 8 said this week that it had taken anchor Kristi Capel off of her normal morning show duties after she used a racial slur on the air.
On Monday, co-anchor anchor Wayne Dawson had been reporting the Oscars when Capel had said that she appreciated Lady Gaga’s Sound of Music tribute because it did not sound like her normal “jigaboo music.”
“It’s hard to really hear her voice with all the jigaboo music — whatever you want to call it — jigaboo!” she said.
Capel later responded on Twitter by copy and pasting an explanation to each person that complained.
“I apologize if I offended you, I had no idea it was a word or what it meant. Thank you for watching,” she wrote.
In a statement on Wednesday, Cleveland 8 said that Capel had been suspended for three days.
“Kristi Capel will not be anchoring ‘Fox 8 News in the Morning’ for the remainder of the week,” the station noted.
However, executives would not confirm if Capel had been formally suspended, or if she was being paid for the remainder of the week.
The Tribune Company, which owns Fox 8 News, has aggressively used the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to take down clips of Capel using the “jigaboo” slur after Raw Story included them in reports.
“This incident has prompted thousands of social media comments and emails from across the viewing area and the nation. Unlike many who have commented,
co-anchor Wayne Dawson and many of us at Fox 8 have the advantage of knowing Kristi Capel personally and her work in our community,” the station’s statement said on Wednesday. “It is for that reason that we join with the pastors she met with on Tuesday to begin the process of forgiveness and healing.”
