I bet you that many of these atheists do have a personal connection with God and don't need to be in a church/ temple to worship him.
Whoa, slow down there buddy. I was with you on people feeling disenfranchised from organized religion, but this sentence makes absolutely no sense.
Now, someone might say they have a personal connection with nature or the universe, in which I would say ... sure, we all do, I suppose. But barring some sort of pantheistic definition, there are no "gods" to have personal connections with (to atheists).
Most of these atheists/agnostics come from a Christian background
Yeah, because most posters live in North America, which is culturally Christian for the most part.
Most people who are educated leave religion not because of their love of money, or wickedness, or arrogance. Personally, once I discovered how many religions there were, and how my own was no more justifiable than most others (or that belief is largely based on blind faith (*edit* faith, and incredulity of science )), I could no longer adhere to that religion, and believe it was the one true one. And then once I realized that all religions are basically fairy tales that haven't be demonstrated to likely be true, agnosticism/atheism is the remainder.
