I've come to believe that political leanings are, for most people, not a function of actual belief unmoored from social pressures, but a function of a political temperament that works relative to a social/political mean. Thus, if Ben Franklin was a somewhat egalitarian pro-abolitionist who gave up potential wealth to benefit society, that puts him on the left fringe of the relative political mean during his era. Transposing his position back then to the political mean today, he'd be heading the occupy wall street rallies.
