One of the folk heroes of the Mets' early season is ready to return. Mike Baxter, who distinguished (and injured) himself making a leaping catch against the left-field wall to preserve Johan Santana's no-hitter, will be activated prior to Monday's game against the Giants. The Mets plan to option outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis to Triple-A Buffalo to clear roster space.
If Scott Hariston is not moved before the deadline something is seriously wrong with this organization.
They are being offered nothing for Hairston and Sandy is trying to get top dollar for a substantial bench player. I say we wait the playoff teams out, at around 345pm they'll all start getting antsy.
Who says they're being offered nothing though? And outside the Wheeler deal what has Sandy done to make us think he is doing anything? This organization said they would be willing to eat salary to bring in relief help but suddenly everyone was too expensive. Last year they sat on valuable pieces that could brought back something (Reyes, Capuano, Brydak, or Izzy). Maybe Sandy is cooking something up but with the Wilpons as owners I have a feeling they want just enough to get to 80 wins so they can try and say they had a competitive team. But I'll reserve judgement till after the deadline before I go on my rant.
Sandy Alderson will be chatting with beat writers at 4:30 p.m. ET, 30 minutes after the deadline.
Alderson has been up front for while. Agree or disagree, he wanted to keep 2012 team competitive, stick to "plan" and not mortgage future.
And that adds up to inaction.
I don't agree about maximizing the win total of a non-playoff team, but whatever.
All I know is for a month, there were multiple AL scouts watching Hairston and telling me they'd love to have him.
Two collapses, then en route to 4th straight losing season. Four legs good. Two legs bad./ RT @burkettsoccer4: Your so negative toward mets.
