An indirect Mase cosign in 2000 meant nothing. Nelly had to put that music out on his own to even get people's attention.
I remember Universal tried to sign every kinda sorta regional act that was out at the time. Anyone who read XXL every month like I did remembers all the ads they had prior to Eminem and Interscope dominating that magazine. Nelly coulda easily been Dirty or Camouflage or Genovese like someone mentioned. It took a minute for that shyt to blow and it just came from a lot of rap based channels playing that shyt a lot and eventually becoming an earworm. Country Grammar was a hit, but IMO E.I. is what made people really wonder who Nelly was.
Ca$h Money can damn near lay that claim themselves to be honest. They were feeding off of each other and Juvenile's co-signs didn't come til after he had dropped Ha (Hov on the Remix, Ruff Ryders on Down Bottom)
