Alright brehs....I'm in my last semester of college at Auburn, im ready to get out, and graduation is this Saturday........ I have a choice to make. .......Graduate with a Computer Science degree now or take one more class(with an 8 stack addition to my infinite debt) for a Software Engineering Degree. I could take a couple classes to finish up my business minor also.

My vote is for Computer Science. It's the more flexible degree...if you wanted to do software engineering, you could do it with that.

Guess its the title of "Professional Engineer" that was always more appealing. I have always wanted to be an engineer and switched from EE cause I liked software. But I've taken out too much money and the engineering course load was hell. My fear is that pay will be less with the CS major overtime. Then I really don't want to be that guy who just writes scripts and troubleshoots Bob's computer(Not that CS majors do that). I just work an IT job now and cant stand basic computer troubleshooting.... I want to design/develop/test code..create software solutions and maybe even consult for a bit....Guess what I need to know is how much is that title worth in the long run?

a Software Engineering Degree.

I hear that u will eventually be able to be a young rich nikka, w a bomb ass resume, and fukk basically any hoe u want....
Then, With your business degree minor.... I hear that some people take analyst classes.... and on the side study speeches and work on presentation skills..... All of this helps u become set for life.

but a CS degree is good as well.

8 stacks is nothing in the bigger picture. i say roll w/ the software engineering as long as you can keep your GPA at ~ the same level it is now. Not sure if the business minor is going to make you much more employable straight out of school, but i'd definitely consider an MBA after a few years working. wish i had taken that route myself

I'll add a few more cents on this as i think about this more...software engineering is the way to go because it'll teach you more of the practical side of coding & touch on some of the concepts inherent to project mgmt/product development. those are skills that will really pay off in a corporate setting and give you an advantage in terms of managerial potential. if you ever want to do your own start-up or create your own app from scratch, etc, i'd think being well versed in the more practical rather than theoretical side of computation would help a lot as well. definitely consider that as you think about this.

Just get them both. The more dergees, the more dollars, espcecially if your a minority friend. But if you choose just one, a computer science degree would likely be best, since this country essentially runs on computers now.

I would say the computer engineering.... and also a MBA or some other random degree that increases analytical ability and presentation skills.....

I usually tell young dudes to get those business skills. The CE degree validates him, but u need mentors and free shyt online, and trail and error to become better than the rest. The fact of him being black doesn't hold him back , imo...........it make it so that he has even more soft skills at his disposal.

As far as the business skills - Let me put it this way... me and these cac have less technical skills than everyone we pay.

As someone who hires in the field. Software engineering. The hardest part for my company is finding decent programmers. Its insane how hard it is to find a quality programmer and how much it has cost my company dumping money into programmers that just don't work out.

I would sacrifice a goat for quality Ruby programmers.

Programmers our the flakest people I have ever ever dealt with.

If there is any quality programmers in this thread with knowledge of Ruby please pm me a resume. If good enough I will pay up to 6 figures.

You don't do contract to hire? I've switch to that.

Also, we use partners to help us find and screen people.

We used a company for that. We hired the most qualified person for 90,000k a year. After two days we realized even with her resume and qualification she couldn't do the job and was so impressed with our programming team she ended up interning with us to advance her skills.

We have also done contract to hire but it still cost a mountain of money to pay for these contracts.

gottdamn...

But u do know that that is the business right? That's just what it is.

You can find good people out there tho. I just hired 2 SR Level .Net(c#) guys..... good. A PHP Developer. and a Jave w Mule.

Watch out for BULLshyt resumes... there are certain questions u can ask that nearly100% sure will weed people out. Plus if they don't start explaining the technical shyt after u hitting them w a general question like "tell me about ur last project" then the bushes they go.

In the end the contract to hire is worth it imo. A guy may want 70/hr, but that's better for 6 month than hiring and firing.
