It's just not in neds nature to play or even want to play power games with the snakes of Kings landing. He's a military man and earned his respect through his sword and honor. He isn't cut out for the schemer life. Hell Robert B isn't either and they both admit this. but Robert forced him into being in KL anyway.

We shyt on ned and Jon for getting finessed and betrayed but they earned much of their rank and respect through their honorable shyt.

In the tv show context it doesn't seem to amount to much when they get murdered because of a little finger type character but LF would never command the type of respect ned or Jon does. All the power LF obtained he got from finessing, lies and murder. But that power was flimsy as sansa demonstrated. not even the knights of the vale really fukked with him. He could never have folks stand up for him and nominate him king like the north does for Jon, robb or presumably ned.

There's a reason the Stark kids still reference and look up to their father, why Jon & Arya wear their hair and armor just like him, why Sansa made that cloak for Jon just like the one Ned had, etc. Meanwhile every other child on the show is either ashamed of, hates, or kills their parents

Ned wasnt even nice with the sword though and for an honorable man, he told and held many lies. I think Ned was just trying to be honorable to make up for all the lies he told and held onto
