It's time to admit that Ned was as terrible of a hand as Robert was a king. Ned's job was to rule for the good of the realm, but Ned always put HIMSELF and HIS honor before everyone and everything else. For example, I always thought that King Robert was right about killing Dany and Viserys. But nooooooo, Ned goes blathering about honor, thinking more about what the people of the realm would think of Robert (and Ned) instead of considering what Robert was saying.
Then he learns about Cersei's secret, and what does this dumb fukk do? He actually goes to Cersei, tells about her about it then tells her he's going to snitch to Robert. Why? So that he can hold his head up and say "look at how HONORABLE I am!" Who gives a fukk who her kids' father is!? Certainly not the realm! What good is Ned Stark's honor in the face of imminent danger? This crazy bytch just said "you win or you die", fool!
Then Robert is dying and Ned has yet another chance to do what was right for the good of the realm (not himself). Ned knows that Stannis on the throne would be a disaster. He knows that a war would be imminent. Yet Ned - a loyal solider of the the usurper, Robert Barathon - has the nerve to scold Renly for not holding to the line of succession. What a hypocrite.
Here, Littlefinger tries (again) to talk sense into Ned, who is now Protector of the Realm. (Key words: THE REALM.) Even better, Baelish called Ned out on his bullshyt. Didn't matter, though.
And for all of the "LOLZ Ned kept a secret and Sansa broke it in a day!" memes, let's not forget when Ned was the one who couldn't keep his mouth shut.
Ned could have bent the knee to Joffrey and Cersei, which would've allowed him back to Winterfell to plot a takeover. Again, Ned has another chance to do what was best for the realm, even if it meant lying for a minute. But nooooo. This is Ned Stark. Can't have a Stark looking dishonorable.
And who went and did this same stupid shyt years later? JON! Perhaps Cersei might have been open for talks later on if Jon had accepted Cersei's truce. But no...he has to say "I'm pledging to someone else. But you'll still help us, right?"
I'm not sure if Ned should've knelt for Joffrey or absconded with Renly (my vote is the latter). But announcing Cersei's secret IN PUBLIC while standing in the damn throne room was the high of self-centeredness, as was pledging to Dany IN PUBLIC during a damned meeting w/the current queen of the seven kingdoms.
tl;dr - Ned was a shytty hand, and it was his own ego (and some terrible TV writing) that led us to exactly where Robert warned us we would be. Jon being a shytty pseudo-king (and some terrible TV writing) led us even closer. Discuss.
Side discussion: what do you brehs think Ned should've done - supported Joffrey (like Littlefinger suggested), left w/Renly or gone to find Stannis?
