the painting is called AMERICAN Gothic:beli:

what kinda remedial sh1t is this? who cares what the painting is called?

the point is that it's a different type of american people than those who settled in the south (look at their clothing etc) so maybe it's not a good representative of that region

the whole point of the painting is that it could be ANYWHERE IN AMERICA...it was indicative of the 1st true American working class, the farmers. Not to mention the style of dress wasn't indicative of ANY region but of a greater national, and really cultural representation.

so then you agree with my initial choice of using it to represent an american region/time period/culture and had no point in bringing up the title. glad we got that cleared up.

1. you got the name wrong.
2. in the context of this topic you stated that the painting was representative of southern christian americans (like the murderer)....which was wrong.

this is the kinda comment you make that's just pointless. I'm using southern gothic as an aesthetic term breh. This sort of hushed up inter family religious rural weirdness is a mainstay of stories from that region/era

Has nothing to do with the painting as the crime happened in Michigan not even the south totally different...and the painting was made in the 1930's (and thus speaks on 1930's America) totally different era. So on many counts it was just a bad example.

I knew what you meant....it was just incorrect. Its a peeve of mine when people reference art incorrectly

Southern gothic the term references old america though. I don't know why you guys can't wrap your heads around this. The title of the painting is not relevant. I know what it's called or I wouldn't have been able to find the image. The painting does reference an old timey american era, which is what I referred to when I said the story sounds like a Southern Gothic tale.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Gothic

Southern Gothic is a subgenre of Gothic fiction unique to American literature that takes place exclusively in the American South. Common themes in Southern Gothic literature include deeply flawed, disturbing or disorienting characters, decayed or derelict settings, grotesque situations, and other sinister events relating to or coming from poverty, alienation, racism, crime, and violence.

It's like if I said a story sounds like film noir and you tell me that film noir was in the 30s so it has no relevance to 2012
or if I said a story sounds romanticist and post something from that era when you say hey romanticism was a 1700s movement

Why is this shyt even news? How the fukk does knowing this benefit the next man? This country fascination with macabre, disgusting bullshyt is ridiculous. Its not enough that Hollywood already fills the media with similar crap, but instead we have so called "legitimate" news media focusing on this garbage as well.

FFS are we really arguing over a got damn picture? It's a sad, sad day when a sociopath/ necrophiliac CHRISTIAN PASTOR with a past criminal record murder's his future step daughter to fulfill a sexual fantasy and the topic in the thread is focusing around a 1930's picture of two farmers with a pitch fork.

Really?
