If it's HSV 1, almost everyone has that shyt. 70% of the world's population has it. Even those who never had cold sores can have it. They don't even test it in most STD tests and for the test to be accurate you have to test for it during an outbreak.

HSV2 is the type of shyt you only get for fukking with dirty people.

Seriously, though, HSV1 is so prevasive like I said, they don't usually test it. Its also something you can get from nonsexual contact such as drinking from a cup that someone with it drinked from so the fact people freak out over it is kind of ridic. HSV2 on the other hand is something usually only transmitted via sexual contact though HSV1 can transfer to the gentials during an outbreak.
