When I was a Naval Officer, I always tried to counsel my enlisted on which women to avoid. I also pointed out that it was probably not a good idea to seek any serious relationships while in the military, because our long absences were a breeding ground for betrayal and cheating.
Too many did not listen though, so I would hear quite about regularly guys returning home and all of his stuff missing or find out his wife or girlfriend was messing around with everyone on and off the base. Sad to see, but it seemed the new guys were incapable of learning from the mistakes and taking to heart the lessons of their seniors.

Any man but especially a military man doesnt try to kill himself. It happens. (thats why men have more suicide numbers and women attempted)
He was just a coward. Thought he was being progressive by agreeing to let his wife whore out their marriage instead of drawing boundaries and dealing with consequences.
