I think you can even abstract further than this on some Orwellian shyt. Who we are in the present is inextricably tied to our personal and collective memory.

If you sanitize collective memory, change it on a whim, etc. eventually people‘s personal memories are impacted. In turn, there will be less conditioning to resist, because there’s nothing tying us to a long history of resistance, that we personalize.

The entanglement of memory (collective and personal) is already an incredibly delicate thing. For example, Mandela Effect is a great indication how we can “misremember“ the same things personally and collectively en masse.
