I'm sure the technology they have is already good enough to detect enormous catastrophic meteors, like the one that landed 65 million years ago and wiped out dinosaurs.

If they can't detect the less devastating ones, the ones that might wipe out a city or a state and not the whole world, I'm not concerned. shyt happens. It's a tragedy. But it wouldn't be any different to if there had been an earthquake or a tsunami or a volcano erupting. That's life, sometimes people die to something no human can possibly control. We're all at the mercy of natural forces
