i think he said in an intervew it's like at the beginning of a basketball game the players don't try hard and that he's sayin the rappers before him rap like they're not trying or on his level, and that with him the real rap begins. He raps like he's playing in the 2nd Half.

maybe because his album dropped after the middle of the year? basically rap albums that dropped this year are inferior to his?

I'm a not racist or anything like that but growing up I always felt that Nas use of Halftime was in reference to a time in the future when Blacks would have more power (wealth, religious, political, scholarly, etc.) in the world than whites. I interpreted it as Nas sayin "yeah I'm rapping now and ya'll are bugging out on my lyrics but wait until halftime when my people are winning then you'll really hear what I need to say"

edit: but i don't think Nas will be alive when that happens....
