You're right....but on the other hand you can't deny there was a negative perception of Nas, and people thought he had fallen off critically and commercially. DMX and Hov had taken over a couple years before the battle, Ja was bigger, etc. Nas was in a weird no man's land where he wasn't "real rap" enough to satisfy purists, and wasn't a good enough mainstream artist to satisfy mainstream fans who were flocking to DMX/Hov/Ja/etc. Nastradamus was THAT bad.
It was the perfect time to attack him and it worked...for awhile. Until Nas came back.
