So back to the vets and another loss to a bad team when late execution fails. The good news is the same as usual; the young guns are looking like legitimate contributors, the vets are putting up numbers to maybe boost their value and the offense in general is in pretty nice shape. But we're almost at February and it's hard to imagine the defense coming together without a dedicated change to the rotation...so team tank is looking strong.
Rose: I'm not sure what he has to do to get whistles, but without those calls his efficiency is gonna take a hit. That's not a shot at him, he was 12-26 to post 26, 5 and 3 but probably should have at least had thirty and a couple less misses with the fact that Phoenix couldn't stop him on downhill drives without hard contact. He's really been strong driving and flashed some nice vision when the Suns doubled him at the top of the key a few times. His defense is still really weak though, he handles screens miserably. Still, he's looking like a great offensive player and that might draw interest from a PG needy team in the hunt for the post season.
Lee: I like aggressive Courtney Lee. He's been making some very nice passes off the dribble lately and also getting himself good looks. Dude gave his usual 3 point contributions and honestly played really well. 13, 3 and 4 boards from the fourth option in the starting line-up is nice. The one hole I saw in his game was his inability to contain Booker especially late. I thought Ron Baker did better on Booker tbh.
Melo: 31 points on 9 for 17 from the field, 6 assists, 7 boards and 5-6 from three but he unfortunately missed the three that would have won the Knicks the game. This dude was brilliant through 3 quarters and didn't force much at PJ Tucker, but that meant taking a backseat in the fourth quarter. So last game he forced too much in the fourth and this time he just floated and didn't do enough; if he could balance it out, the Knicks might actually win some games. Regardless though, this dude has been playing really well lately but as long as the team keeps losing and he struggles late, it's easy to ignore that he's mostly passing well and letting the game come to him (the fourth quarter the other night notwithstanding).
KP: His range isn't really there right now, which is prolly more rust than anything. His biggest impact came in midrange jumpers off pick and pops and post ups in the third. The scary thing about this one was how little he contributed elsewhere though. 7-13 for 14 points, 2 assists and just 1 rebound. Defensively, you could be frustrated to see his man (mostly Chriss) open often, but a LOT of those situations came as KP was covering for a beaten defender without anyone helping him the same way. I hoped he'd have more energy after the break he got, but I'll continue to think he's not assertive enough when he goes off in that third quarter and everyone actively feeds him...he's capable of doing that but floats to the three point line instead too often when I think that baseline 16 ft area should be his home base.
Noah: What I love about Noah is that Tyson Chandler ate everything on the boards last game and Noah's response was to dig in and box out on every possession. He grabbed 15 boards in just 20 minutes and it really came down to hustling to good position on the boards every time. What I hate about Noah is that he grabbed 7 offensive boards and didn't convert a single basket...how is that even possible!? He's Jared Jeffries bad at finishing. He did make some nice passes early but that faded as Tyson Chandler took to not bothering to follow Noah outside at all.
BJ: In a word, forgettable. He wasn't good on D, didn't make a field goal and had zero assists. It's seriously getting to the point where I'd rather see Ron Baker out there because BJ has had next to nothing to contribute too often.
Holiday: Kid got 5 minutes last night even though he's been adding scoring punch to the bench and playing good defense lately. He had 3 points and 2 boards in his time out there with no detrimental effect...so yeah wtf?
Kuz: 18 minutes, 7 points on 3-7 and not a lot else. The Suns athleticism made dude work hard for his buckets; it seemed like he was battling Len inside often. It looks like teams aren't leaving him very often any more and his three ball isn't as much an option anymore but the floor stays stretched when he's present. So he didn't have a huge game, defense left plenty to be wanted but I appreciate a good effort and think he still did mostly positive things in spite of the numbers not showing much.
KOQ: Honestly, it felt like Len was too big for dude and somehow slightly more mobile to boot. So he only got 5 minutes but unlike with Holiday, this dude actually earned the benching.
Willy: So Willy was a spark...again...and Willy went to the bench right as the Knicks lost all momentum and blew the game. 14 minutes 6 points and 8 boards plus 50% from the field and he was actually playing good defense with good rotations. The fact that he didn't play more last night and got 0 minutes last game is kinda mind blowing considering how good he's been when he's gotten minutes.
Ron Baker: This dude is a good defender, it feels like the only time the Knicks force TO's is when Baker is out there. I liked his defense on Booker in the first half much more than Lee's in the second half. He's not bad at getting trickle out rebounds too. So he had 3 points, 3 boards and 2 steals in 19 minutes but he's another young cat whose impact doesn't show in the raw numbers.
Horny: Going to Willy after KOQ wasn't working was nice. Sticking to Ron Baker in the fourth was a good decision too imo. But switching to the Melo/KP big man combo when the Knicks just needed to protect a lead was a piss poor choice imo. They're not gonna get stops and last night, they didn't really help the offensive situation either. Phoenix just ate the boards and had easier forays to the basket. He should get some credit for that last play call though as simple as it was, Baker set a damned good screen and Melo got a great look that was half in. He needs to stick to his experiments longer or stop experimenting though.
Random: So on the "impacts the game without showing up in the statline, I think it's good to give a great example. Melo grabbed a board in the first quarter and dribbled up court quickly; Kuz made a hard sprint to the baseline three point area that force PJ Tucker to slide over. That left Melo about half a second to get up and make a three pointer before Chriss could rotate to cover for Tucker. All Kuz did was sprint hard to the right place and it generated a three point opportunity for Melo.
