It's just like the Knicks to have one of their most dominant games of the season and still manage to give the fanbase a collective heart attack via KP. I hope to God he woke up this morning fine. But to hone in on that would be a damned shame because everything seemed to clique in that game. The Knicks took a weaker opponent and flirted with double digit leads or worse all night while rookies contributed big, KOQ continued his MIP bid, Jennings was a maestro and the top dogs were able to take it fairly light. It was reminiscent of the 54 win season too, as we got our first 12th man chant of the season and God forbid his jumper had gone down...the Garden has it's edge back.
Rose: Rose had 19 points, 3 assists and chipped in 5 boards with 0 TO's and I still look at that stat line and think "it's not telling the whole story." On night when BJ was a passing virtuoso; D-Rose had a second half where his drive and kick passing was really fun to watch. He could have had more assists with guys he found open in rhythm but who missed. He did get blocked a lot, but Biyombo is a freak of nature and the fact that he never backed down opened up a ton. Even being blocked 3 or 4 times that I noticed, he was 7-16. This is a better Rose than I was expecting tbh.
Lee: 10,3,3 plus 2 steals and a block. As usual, he played a very self-contained game and provided visibly good defensive effort. I did catch him not communicate with KP on a pick and roll which meant KP picked up the ball handler and Lee left Ibaka alone from three once...which is something I've caught him doing periodically. But overall, just another good all around game.
Melo: Melo was pressing early and I don't know if you want to blame same ole Welo, distraction from the Karl stuff or thinking he'd still be hot after the Pacers performance but it hurt his percentages. Still, as the game wore on and other players made impacts, you could visibly see Melo ease into a role where he just flowed with everyone. It helped that the bench gave him extended breaks too. 15, 8 and 3 assists; and two of those assists were pick and roll beauties to Joakim Noah...any assist to Noah is impressive let alone two in traffic. He shot 5-17 a mix of bad shot selections and missing easy ones hurt. But overall, he was solid.
KP: This was a bit of a weird game for KP. He didn't assert himself too often but it made sense with how the ball was moving; matter of fact, he was moving it well without forcing shots. 12 pts, 4 boards on 5/11 from the field plus 2 for 2 from three in 27 minutes. He hurt his knee, I think from the contact before he came down and not the landing (hence the contusion). If that's the case, it really isn't serious and peace is restored. But in his minutes, it was a very "in the flow" type of game which may have had to do with the freakishness of Biyombo and Ibaka as athletes.
Noah: Noah has now chained two good games together where his energy and effort was there all night. 6 and 7 along with a couple of steals but also 3 TO's (a couple being ugly). He only played 22 minutes but not because he'd hurt the team, KOQ was just amazing. The big note on this one is that for a few games now the Knicks have found a fairly effective way to address Centers sinking off of Noah all the way back to the rim. It's pretty basic but Noah passes or sets the pick and immediately makes a HARD cut to the basket...that's it. Melo found him in motion twice, KP looked for him early too and the PG's hit him a few times too. The results were mixed but it turned Noah into a factor and got him nice positioning to battle on the boards.
Jennings: Jennings shot 1 for 5 for 4 points but tallied 12 assists to 3 TO's in what was just a masterful passing performance. This guy was a transition NIGHTMARE for the Magic, slashing through traffic and hitting open men with an array of passes from any angle you can imagine. The behind the back beauty to Willy stands out but his second quarter run is the real one to watch. It looked like he was playing at a different speed from the rest of the players on some Bo Jackson in Super Tecmo Bowl ish. It should be noted too that Elfrid Payton is a good defender (or was, I haven't watched Orlando much this season) but had nothing to stop Jennings from getting ANYWHERE that he wanted. His chemistry with any unit that'll run for him is beautiful.
Holiday: 2-8 for 5 points and his only other tally was 1 steal in 20 minutes...but he had a plus 7 for his efforts and I think I can tell you why. His off ball motion was REALLY visible last night and the Magic were so damned confused by anyone moving off the ball that his forays from one wing to the opposite baseline would command way too much attention. One of his most forgettable games and I still wasn't mad in spite of bad shooting.
Kuz: In 18 minutes he had 6 points, 3 assists, 2 boards, a steal and a block. He does a bit of everything based largely on effort. He had one assist where he turned a fumbled pass along the baseline into an opportunity to make a no-look kick to a cutter. He had two no-look pass assists in this one and sold a ball fake to open an angle for a cutting man on an inbounds as well. All three of those assists were pretty. He did hesitate on a three after missing just one which I don't like to see, but that's new guy stuff. I really enjoy watching this dude work...his game has an edge to it.
KOQ: WOW! It's gotta suck to be a Magic fan and watch Biyombo and Ibaka making all that money get destroyed by a guy you let walk for around 4 million a season. Kyle was 6-12 for 14 points with 16 boards and 5 blocks along the way in just 24 minutes. His energy was insane and while he didn't clock an assist, it was fun to catch how his passing and vision helped turn defensive boards into quick outlets for BJ to get the transition going. Basically, the second unit chemistry leans heavily on the combination of KOQ rebounding, BJ running and both guys abilities to see the floor and move the ball. Also, it bares mention how he called everyone into a huddle with a big lead and one minute left...you could see this guy oozing LEADERSHIP in that moment...I don't know how much longer I can contain my expectations when he's been so good for so long.
Willy: When KP went down in the fourth, Willy showed up and picked things up for his best buddy. He had a monstrous 4th quarter after playing pretty well all game long. 7 for 11 for 15 points and 5 boards in 21 minutes. The 5 boards is understandable with the way KOQ was snatching EVERYTHING too. I was pointing out Willy taking the odd long jumper once in a while and he knocked one down and took a second one in this game. It's looking like he's really focusing on extending his jumper which is a scary proposition for a dude so young with such impeccable footwork. I'm more and more excited about this kid...he's just so technically sound.
Ron Baker: The twelfth man chant feels like a tradition for Knicks blowouts at the Garden, but they're so rare maybe I'm exaggerating. I was there the first time the chant got Rasheed Wallace out there and he was a rotation player within the week. The thing about the chant too is that it's not just given to any bum 12th man (ain't no Sasha chants poppin'...just messin' with Can'tStop
). Ron Baker had done a solid job in Rose's absence and the Garden faithful gave him his due. He played one minute, so no actual analysis here, jut a fun chance to shout out the Garden.
Sasha: Like Ron, there was nothing to evaluate here but he deserves a big shoutout. The broadcast showed a clip of Sasha taking Willy and Kuz back out on the Garden floor to get a shooting workout in after the Knicks had won at home and those guys hadn't played. I've been a pretty big Sasha hater but recognized that in short runs, he can be a spark...this sort of stuff is why he's always ready and it seemed to translate for the rookies too. That's leadership I hadn't seen or noted and adds a hidden value to his contract that I missed. Combine that sort of guidance with the fact that he can give you 5 good minutes on nights that you just need a quick energizer and maybe he deserves that roster spot after all.
Horny: I'm telling you that this dude is low key a murderer. The bench was doing just fine but let up just a little bit, so with a double digit lead late he swept the leg and brought Melo in to make sure the Knicks finished curb stomping the Magic instead of letting up. Horny benched Lance Thomas who has been largely ineffective and rode Kuzminskas' effort instead on this night (after a deserved benching for poor defensive awareness). He found 20 minutes a pop for Noah, KOQ and Willy which was a fair reward as all three played really well but all three are centers at heart. He has a really good feel for his players and knows when to play guys. On most nights, he's making the right decisions or experimenting until he finds the right one. It's a combination of flexibility and savvy that has Hornacek looking like the best in-game coach we've had in the 00's. Here's a quick moment; the Knicks went down 12-11 in the first quarter and Hornacek called a time out...they smoked the Magic from that moment on...because Hornacek has the surgical precision with TO's and substitutions only an assassin would have. Dexter outchea!
Random: Elfrid Payton's hair flops even when he doesn't mean to; drawing fouls that he otherwise might not get. Poor Frank Vogel, watching the Knicks in the Garden and then looking over at his bench and seeing Stephen Zimmerman sit there like the Plumlee brother the family abandoned as a baby because it wasn't good enough on some Spartan ish...dude needs a Christmas miracle of some players that actually fit together on the court.
