The difference between a good team and a mediocre one tends to be consistency. Teams will show you flashes but the ones that can give you their best level of play for the better part of 48 minutes on a near nightly basis are the ones who get somewhere. So far the Knicks have been wildly inconsistent, but they've been inching toward more consistency on the defensive end and making real strides as an offense. The team showed up locked in last night on both ends; while KP set the tone on the offense it was surprisingly Melo who really set an effort tone on defense with some great ball denial of Morris. Noah came from being benched an entire half to have his best defensive performance as a Knick. Then you had KP; let's just put it out there, if the KP we've seen over the past few games in terms of aggression and awareness is the KP we get for the majority of this season...The Knicks have playoff hopes get a serious boost. The kid isn't just playing like a good young player any more, he's looking like a star right now.
Rose: Rose is another cat who came in really locked in defensively although his effort dipped a bit later in the game. He kept Ish Smith out of the paint for the better part of this game and that's not easy. He was able to pump 15 points and 3 assists but the passing numbers don't show how often he made a serious effort to get the ball to KP in comfort zones. This was a promising run for him.
Lee: Dude really struggled with his shot, and no in terms of forcing much. The ball movement would find him in a good place to shoot and he'd just brick. He also had some trouble navigating a myriad of screens off the ball which got KCP going early. That said, his defense tailed up with KCP just making higher difficulty shots as things went along and he managed multiple steals.
Melo: That ball denial on Morris and defensive effort all game is one part awesome and two parts "why can't this guy be locked in like that every night." It was last year's Melo on defense and the difference that made was palpable. Offensively, you rarely see him get opportunities to just play off another guy in his career, but he rode behind KP all night. His reward was a high efficiency night with a ton of "gimme" three point opportunities. The only negative was a period in the fourth where he went clock kill and committed back to back TO's (one passing and one in ISO) but he responded with a nice clock kill score and barely if ever went ball-stopper last night.
KP: It's not just the 35 points or the 3 assists and 7 boards behind it; it's not just that he committed to chasing Harris off of the three point line all night; it's how easily this game looked for him. That post-up near the baseline to a turn around jumper has become near unstoppable and he's attacking with cross overs to pull-ups off the dribble. He runs the floor well enough to get some easy looks and his finishing around the basket has improved significantly. He had moments where he looked to attack, saw quality defense and kicked the ball back out for others to eat but he was always aggressive. This would be a coming out party if KP didn't have such a massive following already, instead it's more of a "finally didn't stop shooting at 28 points" moment.
Noah: Hats off to this guy for responding to getting benched with a really great game. Nothing says "this guy's locked in" like watching Noah yell "how many seconds man" at a ref for missing a clear three second violation on Drummond. Noah was able to curtail some of the "just wait in the paint" strategy by cutting directly into the paint at some angles which got him a few easy looks and drew him some FT's (but he really should try to make a few). He had 3 blocks and grabbed 15 boards against arguably the best rebounder in the game. He also had moments like Rose, where he seemed to have a single determination to get KP that rock. Really nice game.
BJ: The one dude who didn't get the memo about defense was Jennings. He really struggled on that end. Yet the dude was moving the ball so well that it kept him from being detrimental to the team. The starting unit shared 3 assists each but the second unit completely relied on BJ's creation as he tallied 7. He also had a shooting night that even Lance Thomas would scoff at, but he limited his attempts which is nice.
Holiday: 9 pts, 5 boards and one of the best defensive efforts of the night (yet again). Holiday's hands are so active that he manages blocks on jump shooters and makes ball handlers completely uncomfortable. He chases boards, picks spots to attack the defense and is just overall a quality piece off the bench.
Kuz: Was quiet in this one, just notched a couple boards in his few minutes.
Ndour: It was weird that he got a shot when he did, but he made the most of it. Which is to say he did everything he normally does but actually CAUGHT THE BALL. That meant a couple of very easy baskets, grabbed some boards and played solid defense to boot. 9 good minutes from him.
KOQ: He's been solid all season but this was a real show out for him. He was all over the place, notched 3 blocks but changed even more shots. Had two assists and one of them was an absolute beauty from the elbow. His mid range jumper has looked like a consistent weapon for a while now and that continued. 15 mins managed 6 pts, 2 assists, 5 boards, 1 steal and 3 blocks...dude wanted his spot back.
Willy: He has ZERO chemistry with KOQ. It's gotta be one or the other but can't be both. KOQ was playing really well so KOQ got the nod. Tough to judge Willy off 4 mins in a two Center no space situation.
Jeff: Quickly shifted off that Willy/KOQ tandem when it failed again. Jumped to a Rose/BJ combo when the team started to rely on Melo clock kill which caused a couple of TO's in the fourth. He put Ndour in at a time when it was questionable and Ndour delivered. Jeff came with some real precision...serial killer precision.
Random: Trap game against the Wizards something fierce. KP logged 40 and Melo logged 37 minutes and the starters all logged decent chunks of time with potentially the fastest player in the league up next at home and a team that desperately needs a win. The Wiz haven't looked good, so this is an opportunity to get a roll and establish some of that consistency I was talking about...but I'm nervous at KP and Melo's fatigue.
And whoever's a part of Aron Baynes inner circle needs to talk to him about that hair. Someone tell him to get a better posse.
