Alright, a good night's sleep to reflect on it and a few things stand out. The C's got off to a fast start aided heavily by IT and Marcus Smart hitting three's that weren't tightly contested because you really don't expect 'em to pull it from that far out. After the three point barrage and a TO though, the Knicks settled in and started chipping away. The biggest struggle for the squad was that great Celtics Guard defense really took our PG's out of the game impact wise. That didn't really matter though, Melo had a huge mismatch and the second unit led by Willy and Kuz really swung the momentum all the way to the Knicks by the middle of the second. Then the Melo T's happened and the wheels immediately fell off. The C's were physical all night, but Courtney Lee barely had a chance to match it in the first and Marcus Smart's physical play was a non-starter for anyone in a Knicks jersey. Without Melo to get timely buckets, the Knicks really seemed to fold mentally. The only cats to really show hard were Noah, who tried hard to hype the crowd and Holiday who rarely shows any emotion. The Knicks brought in guys to help be leaders, but Noah can't provide the scoring to calm a skittish team and Rose was straight awful from the second on. BJ might have been worse than Rose, Rozier absolutely owned his soul. Whether you blame the Knicks for mentally folding, Melo for not walking away or Tony Brothers for being way too sensitive; this was a loss that didn't need to happen...at least not that way.
Rose: 3-10 from the field; 6 assists but only 2 after the first; 7 TO's...he finally gave up on the floater and started drawing fouls in the third, but it was too little too late. Thomas really smoked him from the opening whistle on. This was his worst performance easily as a Knick.
Lee: 0-4 a lot of 1's across the box score for him. He was well defended and could never get a rhythm going. Early foul trouble hurt him and not having players put pressure on the defense meant he didn't have the space to work with that he has in his better showings. Bad one for him too.
Melo: 12 pts, 2 board and an assist in 12 minutes...he was cooking. He's also got to bare a lot of the blame for walking back to Tony Brothers after the first T. I'll give him as much as this; he wasn't making a scene and was walking the opposite direction of the ref when that second T got queued up which was very bizarre. But the team never recovered without him on a night when he was poised to have a big one.
KP: 5-15 and no three pointers; likely because the PG's just couldn't get much going. He had a couple of nice blocks but when there was contact he would pull-up looking for the foul instead of going up INTO the contact to force the ref's to make a call. Like everyone else, he looked much better when Melo was around to take weight off of him.
Noah: 9 pts, 10 boards, 2 assists, 3 blocks...not having a tough assignment inside meant that he was a better help defender than other nights and on multiple occasions when the team started to flounder, he would provide a spark for a short run but it was unsustainable without a scorer to step up and keep the wave going. He was good last night, good enough that if it was close I could see him logging a lot more minutes and really loading up that box score. The offense should have run through him MORE with the PG's struggling so hard. He did have 3 TO's but overall a good game.
Jennings: Rozier really kept BJ from getting where he wanted to on the floor. BJ, like KP, would take physical contact and pull up away from it while trying to draw fouls which meant some ugly looks. He also had times where his inability to break down the defense for 10 seconds meant an ugly forced jumper with time still on the clock (the PG version of surrendering). He only had 2 assists to 3 TO's, shot abysmal 1 for 7 and was completely ineffective. His getting tossed again, looked more like surrendering.
Holiday: 10 pts, 5 boards and a couple of blocks to boot. He filled in for Lee nicely after early foul trouble meant extra mins for this dude. He made some timely jumpers early. But he completely faded and became ineffective after Melo left, like completely. He did do a nice job on defense though.
WeWantARefund Thomas: Statline doesn't look bad, but his game sure as hell does. He's not even good defensively right now, just plain average. He's not shooting well from range at all. Even a couple of his rebounds were lucked into. 7 and 5 boards, a boost in FG% but that's still on 3 for 7 which isn't good. He's not helping out there.
Kuz: The best ball movement of the game happened between this kid and Willy...two rookies. His aggression really adds an important dimension to a bench unit that looks straight up impotent at times. He's also not killing us defensively out there and he gets into the mix inside too.
Willy: Don't let the 4-13 fool you; a chunk of those came on tip ins and offensive boards where he went right back up but couldn't buy a whistle (which was bizarre if you looked at the opposite end). He had 5 TO's which was bad, but a couple of those were him attempting really rough passes and a couple came fighting inside in chaotic situations. He had 3 assists and really looked to pass. He was a nightmare to keep off the boards for the C's. He also had a really nice block and was challenging cats at the rim to middling success. It's his spot as the back-up C now and he looks like a guy who could become a positive for our second unit often.
Sasha: When the Knicks made a couple of runs but started to slip, he took it on himself to launch three's from well behind the line and brick them. He was killing momentum like a referee out there for us. His defense wasn't good either. Dude was trash.
Baker: Wasn't very good out there, but he was in garbage time with tired reserves and didn't get much opportunity to do much.
KOQ: He came out and immediately took a bad shot on some "might as well while I got this opportunity" ish. He was fired up a bit though after Zeller tried to show him up with a dunk. He threw Zeller to the floor drawing an offensive foul I didn't mind and the next time down dunked on these cats. Got 3 boards in 3 mins. He's the third string and a better third string than most teams have but still a third stringer.
Hornacek: I'd have liked to see him pick up a T early and try to influence the refs more earlier. He got fired up mostly on the Avery Bradley blatantly out of bounds jump ball but I thought he could have done and said more (even post game). Without Melo, he really couldn't do much to get these guys back into the focus needed to win and refs really broke up any rhythm on top of that. He dealt with foul trouble for key guys and an ejection for his star. Not much he could do, but he should have taken the fine for a T.
Random: Rozier's defense was really nice, Thomas hit three's which I thought he was trash at, ditto for Smart. I wonder how long it takes to get the identity where you can lean on offensive players and play that physical without being whistled out of the game rapidly. I'd like the Knicks to earn that reputation but it's FAAAAR away and they don't seem to have the mentality to pull that off.
