maybe i'm the only one who feels this way, idk.
but i listened to her mixtape and she displayed lots of flavors. different styles, flows, voices, personalities, sides of her, braggadocious, conscious, self-confessions, etc.
She is definitely talented.

However, I don't hear a "signature sound" or a "signature persona" from her. She did way too many voices to the point where i couldn't even point her out in a track if i heard her, like when she was on Tylers album and i was wondering who it was and didn't know until i looked up his features after.

I'm not saying artists are at fault for trying a slew of different things, but I just cannot pin her or recognize "her".

I like the fact that she's doing a lot of different things.

Too many artists get stuck in one lane. Having a signature sound isn't for everyone. It's not like Gang Starr. For an artist like her, it's dope to be able to have mad flows and styles. It brings in a lot of different listeners.

Hip Hop and R&B acts get thrown in a box too much. It limits them. So what Doe's doing is dope, and it's definitely working for her.

Industry plant biting Nicki🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

i actually just heard this and it prompted me to make this thread.

I don't have an issue with her paying homage which it sounds like she is doing here (she obviously isn't trying to hide it by any means), but this is my problem with her. She can flip a style and all, but she doesn't really have her own "sound" that she really hones in on that i've noticed. I cannot separate her from her voice alone because she tends to "over"use it imo in quirky ways that are unrecognizable to me.

i feel what you mean about gettin stuck in a box.

But to me, she's like a candy bag of assorted flavors, and i only may like one of those 7 flavors, so i end up not liking the candy itself if i have to buy a whole bag of 6 other flavors that are kinda meh to me.

I get that.

But when she was putting her tracks out and she had a nice variety, I was hype to hear that.

The issue with the females now is that they make the same song 182 times. Same sound, same topic, same cadences, etc. That's why we don’t see these chicks hanging around for that long. It's not exciting to keep hearing the same sh*t from the same artist. So when she dropped this project, I was on here telling everybody to go f*ck with it because her approach is wild different than what we've been seeing forever. The game really needs that.

Nah I feel that way too

I don't think she's bad, if anything she's got a lot of talent

But it reminds me of someone trying out a bunch of styles they admire (from the sound of her voice to the content), and they can do them well...but you don't really get a sense of "them" in any of it

Maybe it will change with time and she finds her comfort zone or feels comfortable being her instead of trying a bunch of styles in what seems like a way to win an audience

i think there's a middle-ground that is ideal. A lot of modern female hip hop artists are definitely homogenous and one trick ponies, i give you that.....but you don't have to be absolutely different every single song OR the same EVERY single song.
