neat congrats, what got this recognition? did you promote it more or...?
Think it was a mixture of timing and finding the right contest. The Philly setting is a big part of the script so Set in Philly was a good contest for me to submit it to. Also, the judges read the script around the same time Mike Bloomberg entered the presidential race and the Stop and Frisk policy was on a lot of people's minds. The script deals with racial profiling so it made it more timely than it initially was.
I use a website called coverfly to submit my scripts to different contests. If your script places well in a contest it boosts its coverfly score. So when that happens industry readers affiliated with the website start to notice. So winning SIP boosted its score and a producer reached out to me. Unfortunately that didn't work out (DM me if you want to hear that story lol). What I've been trying to do now is network more, going on other forums (Facebook Screenwriting group, reddit screenwriting) and meeting other writers
I'm also trying to use the connections I've made after winning the contest since it's sponsored by the Greater Philadelphia Film Office. Unfortunately all the shutdowns really delayed all that. I was supposed to go to an award ceremony for the competition where I'd be able to meet more people but it got canceled. But I've still been maintaining contact with them
But yeah, getting a script sold is like winning the lottery and even if you're lucky enough to do that once you sell it they can change everything. So it's a long, slow grind. Only reason I do it is because I have a genuine passion for it.
